Blackphone: Most secured Android smartphone unveiled; specs and pre-order price

If you are getting paranoid by all the NSA monitoring and privacy intrusion conundrums, then this ultra-secured Android smartphone called Blackphone might be the best mobile device for you. Blackphone is product of the encryption company Silent Circle in collaboration with Spain-based hardware startup Geeksphone which was recently announced at MWC 2014.

The Blackphone might not be the fanciest and prettiest smartphone around, but it is the first smartphone to bring "privacy and control directly in the hands of its users.". It looks pretty standard with 4.7 inch HD IPS display, 2GHz quad-core processor, 16GB of internal storage, LTE capable and equipped with an 8-megapixel camera. But much of its security merits lies in its Android-based OS called PrivatOS that includes other useful privacy apps like Silent Phone, Silent Text, and Silent Contacts. It has also been preloaded with proprietary apps like Blackphone Security Center, Blackphone Activation Wizard, and Blackphone Remote Wipe.

Having these security apps help users be anonymous while online or using the Internet. But, in order for two users to have encrypted communication with each other, both should be using a Blackphone or at least utilizing Silent Circle’s apps. If not, then it’s just like you’re using an unsecured mobile phone.

But this ultra-secured privilege comes with a hefty price pre-order price of $629 (approx. Php28,000). With that amount of money, you’ll have an open-line unit and an option for a bundled two-year subscription to either Silent Circle’s privacy apps, a Disconnect provided VPN, or 5GB worth of cloud storage. Blackphone will start shipping this June 2014.

Blackphone specs (as announced):

4.7-inch HD IPS screen
2GHz quad-core processor
2GB RAM
16GB Internal storage
LTE and HSPA+ connection
8MP camera with flash
