Samsung unveils two Exynos 5 processors: Exynos 5422 Octa and Exynos 5260 Hexa

Another big MWC 2014 announcement was revealed yesterday from smartphone industry frontrunner Samsung. Two high-end application processors were unveiled, Exynos 5422 Octa and Exynos 5260 Hexa processors, both supporting Quad HD displays.

First among the two high-performance CPUs is the Samsung Exynos 5422 Octa. It has eight cores total, four ARM Cortex-A15 cores for performance intensive apps (clocked at up to 2.1 GHz), and four smaller ARM Cortex-A7 cores for lighter loads (clocked at up to 1.5 GHz). The new 5422 processor promises to deliver up to 34% higher performance compared to previous Samsung Exynos Octa CPUs and can save power consumption by up to 10%.

The second processor is the Exynos 5260 Hexa. This one as stated offers six core units, two 1.7Ghz ARM Cortex-A15 and four 1.3Ghz ARM Cortex-A7 cores.

The 8-core Exynos 5422 is expected to be mass produced this quarter, while the Exynos 5260 is already in production and is currently the SoC to be used in the recently announced Galaxy Note 3 Neo.

Both processors support high-resolution displays such as WQHD (2560 x 1440) and WQXGA (2560 x 1600) utilizing advanced Multi-format Codec (MFC) supporting 4k UHD resolution.
