Quad-core processors will still be very much around for a longer period of time even as octa-core powered devices are being introduced left and right. Aside from Mediatek's own octa-core cpu, which the company has recently released and are being used by several of the latest smartphones in the market, the chipmaker has also announced its very first quad-core 64-bit SoC with LTE connectivity.
The Mediatek MT6732 is based on an ARM Cortex-A53 processor paired with Mali-T760 graphics.
Rival Qualcomm also previously introduced their 64-bit SoC (Snapdragon 410 LTE) right after Apple unveiled their new A7 chip as the first 64-bit capable procie.
Currently, there isn’t much use and demand for 64-bit chipsets in smartphones, but Mediatek's MT6732 could be the step needed to push everything in that direction. Shipment for this SoC is held until 3rd quarter of 2014 so we could expect it sometime late this year or early next year for smartphones and tablets to have them on board.
